Binary hard-sphere fluids near a hard wall

By using the Rosenfeld density functional, we determine the number density profiles of both components of binary hard-sphere fluids close to a planar hard wall as well as the corresponding excess coverage and surface tension. The comparison with published simulation data demonstrates that the Rosenfeld functional, both its original version and sophistications thereof, is superior to previous ap...

Soft depletion in binary fluids.

We show theoretically that a binary fluid characterized on a mesoscopic scale by purely repulsive short-range interactions without cores possesses an effective attraction between like particles. This "soft depletion effect" is a generic phenomenon driving a mixing-demixing transition in a binary system with pure repulsions.

Hard-sphere fluids in annular wedges: density distributions and depletion potentials.

We analyze the density distribution and the adsorption of solvent hard spheres in an annular slit formed by two large solute spheres or a large solute and a wall at close distances by means of fundamental measure density-functional theory, anisotropic integral equations, and simulations. We find that the main features of the density distribution in the slit are described by an effective two-dim...

Optimal packing of polydisperse hard-sphere fluids

We consider the effect of intermolecular interactions on the optimal size-distribution of N hard spheres that occupy a fixed total volume. When we minimize the free-energy of this system, within the Percus–Yevick approximation, we find that no solution exists beyond a quite low threshold (h'0.260). Monte Carlo simulations reveal that beyond this density, the size-distribution becomes bimodal. S...

On the critical non-additivity driving segregation of asymmetric binary hard sphere fluids

A previously proposed version of thermodynamic perturbation theory, appropriate for singular pair interactions between particles, is applied to binary mixtures of hard spheres with non-additive diameters. The critical non-additivity DC required to drive fluid–fluid phase separation is determined as a function of the ratio !! 1 of the diameters of the two species. DC(!) is found to decrease with...
